About Orenstein Legal Services 

Orenstein Lawyers is a legal and consulting practice started by Joel Orenstein in 2009. Originally based in Bairnsdale in East Gippsland, the practice relocated to Preson in 2013 and now has offices in Geelong.

 

Orenstein Lawyers has particular expertise in working with disadvantaged and vulnerable communities and individuals, and consciously integrates a values-based approach into legal work, centred on compassion, dignity, justice and respect.

 

From humble beginnings, the firm has grown significantly and now is a recognised industry leader in the provision of legal services in the Children's Court across Victoria.

Joel Orenstein

Joel is an experienced lawyer, mediator, trainer, and advocate. Since being admitted to practice Joel has specialised in the areas of child protection, criminal law, crime compensation and Indigenous rights. A compassionate and experienced advocate, Joel has represented thousands of people achieve the best possible outcomes through the justice system.

 

Joel has a particular expertise in working with disadvantaged and vulnerable communities and individuals, and consciously integrates a values-based approach into his legal work, which is centred on compassion, dignity, justice and respect. Joel is particularly experienced in cross-cultural issues specific to Indigenous communities.

 

Joel is a Law Institute of Victoria Accredited Specialist in Children Law. In recognition of his expertise in this area, and in particular his work with Aboriginal families, Joel was awarded a scholarship by Law Institute of Victoria in 2014. Joel also holds a Masters in International Law from the Australian National University which was awarded in 2004.

 

Joel is also a well respected trainer with industry specific knowledge and skills. He continues teach extensively in the areas of advocacy, mental health, legal rights and obligations, with a particular focus on legal issues specific to the community sector.

 

Apart from his legal practice, Joel is dedicated to wellbeing has been facilitating mindfulness courses, workshops and retreats since 2002. Joel consciously integrates mindfulness practices into his own legal practice. During 2012 he attended the teachers practicum at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, which has been facilitating evidence based public mindfulness-based stress management programs for over 20 years. He writes extensively on mindfulness and professional life. His article, “The Mindful Lawyer”, appeared on the cover of the July 2011 edition of the Law Institute Journal.
